Mixpanel pitch deck (2014)

Mixpanel's 2014 pitch deck is the 12-slide deck behind its $65M Series B, led by Andreessen Horowitz at an $865M valuation. Co-founder Suhail Doshi published it in December 2014 with the most sensitive numbers blacked out. Founders study the Mixpanel pitch deck because it shows how short a growth-stage deck can be when the story is one clear problem and a page of sales metrics.

What the Mixpanel deck does well

  • Slides 2 to 5 state the problem, the solution and the mission in four slides of one sentence each, so the pitch is clear before a single chart appears.
  • Slide 8 gives the sales numbers a Series B investor checks first, rep count, share of customers touched by sales and payback period, in a plain list.
  • Slide 10 turns the money into concrete moves, such as tripling sales headcount and opening New York in 2015, instead of a generic use of funds chart.

What founders can learn from it

  • If you share your deck publicly, black out the sensitive numbers the way Mixpanel did on slides 7 to 10 rather than not sharing it at all.
  • At a later stage, spend your slides on how growth works, like the sales and marketing pages on slides 8 and 9, not on market size.
  • Name your technical edge and when you built it. Slide 6 dates Mixpanel's database engine to 2010, which tells investors the lead is years old.
