How many slides should a pitch deck have?
Based on advice from Aaron Harris (Y Combinator), DocSend research · Updated 2 October 2026
Short answer
Y Combinator's seed template has 9 sections, and Aaron Harris says each should be one slide if you can manage it and never more than three, with the title as exactly one slide. In practice that's about 10 to 15 slides. The real seed decks in the PitchMagic library range from 8 slides (Intercom) to 25 (Uber).
What famous seed decks actually used
The slide count of every real seed deck in the PitchMagic library:
- Intercom (2011): 8 slides
- Coinbase (2012): 11 slides
- Buffer (2011): 13 slides
- Airbnb (2008): 14 slides
- Notion (2013): 16 slides
- Dropbox (2007): 17 slides
- Peloton (2011): 17 slides
- Uber (2008): 25 slides, written before the app existed, so it spends many slides explaining the idea
Why shorter decks get read
DocSend tracked how investors read decks and found they spend about 3 minutes and 44 seconds on a seed deck. At 15 slides that's around 15 seconds a slide.
That's why YC's template asks for clarity and concision. As Aaron Harris puts it, most seed companies don't have much meaningful detail to explore yet, and decks that pretend otherwise lose the investor.
In your deck
Count your slides per section. Any section over three slides is a candidate to cut, starting with the ones that don't move the story forward.

Questions founders ask
- Is 20 slides too many for a pitch deck?
- For a seed deck, usually. YC's template has 9 sections and says no section should need more than three slides, and most should take one.
- What is the 10/20/30 rule?
- Guy Kawasaki's rule for presenting a pitch: 10 slides, 20 minutes, and no font smaller than 30 points.
- How many slides should a Series A deck have?
- YC says its seed template is not all that different from a Series A deck. You'll usually need more slides for metrics, but the same sections and the same discipline apply.
